The path to winning is never one lined with familiarity. As baseball players, we know what it means to have to make sacrifices along the way. Success in baseball required all of us to make an unpopular decision with others around us at one time or another. In business, this type of decision is equally important.
Last week I had the chance to take in the Brewers and Padres playing while spending a few days in my hometown of Milwaukee. Watching the Brewers win on a walk off HR Friday night was not only fun but such a great reminder. It made me think about the 25 guys on the team. Likely none of them ever dreamed of living in Milwaukee but their dream job took them there.
There’s always some type of trade required to accomplish what’s on our heart. As much as I would be comfortable in Milwaukee my dream is calling me to be in Ft. Lauderdale. This week I started a new job. It isn’t just any job though. It really is my dream job. It took years of hard work in previous roles and building a relationship for the timing and opportunity to align with the new company.
Making it to the big leagues is never the ultimate goal for any player. Making it and have a long, successful career is. In the same way in business I’ve earned my chance. Now I get to prove I belong.
Whether you are still playing or your playing days are behind you, don’t put boundaries that will hold you back or limit yourself from reaching them. Who knows where the journey of pursuing your dreams will take you?
